Romantic and Gothic British literature

The term gothic is not a new or recent one but was rather used in politics and aesthetics as early as the seventeenth century. This is an introductory course to trace the origins of gothic literature with a focus on orientalism, the Islamic Orient, and its impact on the rise of gothic literature in general and fiction in particular. 

The student will learn the characteristics of the gothic from villainy to setting and how the body is of central interest in the development of gothic literature especially in decadent fin de siècle.

Rise of the Novel

This course is an introduction to the 'novel' as a genre, its literary and cultural development and how Ian Watt perceives its rise in the eighteenth century.
We should be reading at least Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe to analyse Watt's book The Rise of the Novel.

Objectif(s) de la matière : connaitre les enjeux socio-économique, politique et culturel du 18ème siècle.
