Theory of literature is an interesting discipline sitting at the heart of literature and literary studies. It will introduce the reader to the major theoretical approaches to the study of literature. In fact, the study or ‘analysis’ develops beyond the evaluation, relations of characters. It transcends the sheer evaluation of a novel or a poem or even a play as it revolves mainly around ideas and issues that the literary text mirrors. It also focusses on theories that try to interpret the literary output. The design and development of the new critical theories is the craft of scholars who have put forth methodologies for interpretation. These methodologies do not necessarily belong to literature properly speaking but to neighboring disciplines in the arts and the humanities.
